A fall, a road accident, a hard tackle — knowing what to do in the first few minutes after a suspected fracture can make a real difference to recovery.
Do not try to realign or straighten the limb. Immobilize it in the position found, using a splint or firm support if available.
Wrap ice in cloth and apply gently to reduce swelling and pain — never apply ice directly to the skin.
Raising the injured limb above heart level, if it can be done without moving the fracture, helps limit swelling.
Go to an emergency room or call an orthopedic surgeon immediately — especially for open fractures, visible deformity, or numbness.
⚠ Never move someone with a suspected spine or neck fracture. Keep them still and call for emergency help immediately.
